When I was younger I didn’t truly understand the meaning of Memorial Day. To me, it was a 3-day weekend filled with BBQ’s, swimming and fun times with family and friends. In the back of my mind I knew the meaning but I lacked the appreciation for it. I didn’t know many people who served in the military and I didn’t know much about the military at all. As I got older, I realized the deeply raw meaning behind it. I respected the day more and took a moment to acknowledge those we have lost. After Eddie passed away Memorial day hit me hard. It seems silly to me to have just 1 day when I feel the men and women who have sacrificed their lives deserve so much more. And that’s why we have the golf tournaments, the family/friend gatherings and the special things we do to remember those we lost.
This Memorial Day I ask you to take a few minutes to acknowledge those like Eddie who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Let’s also continue to celebrate the lives of these selfless people by appreciating the moments we often take for granted. Live each day like it’s your last. Surround yourself with the people you love. Don’t wait years to take that trip you have been wanting to go on. Smile through the tears and savor the happy moments.
